本片根據黑澤明自己的故事改編

一部引人入勝，卻有幾分瑕疵的黑澤明電影，描述一位年輕警探努力的尋回他在擁擠的公車上被偷走的一枝手槍。雖然最後沒有尋獲，他仍然可以發配到新的(影片背景是在日本二次大戰敗戰後不久，槍枝是非常缺乏的)，但三船敏郎心裡惦記著尋找槍枝，為此過失負起個人的責任，因為遺失的手槍涉及一場謀殺案。最後罪犯被追蹤捕獲，並且尋回槍枝。但顯而易見的，三船確實有著追捕他自己的罪犯的衝動(他的上司志村喬說假如他沒有當上警察，他也會變成一個盜賊)，並且身歷其境地體驗了這個兇手的罪行。黑澤明本身不認為《野良犬》一片是他成功的作品之一，因為他成認太關切技術而忽略了人物角色。儘管有技術上的失誤，《野良犬》依然是一部強而有力的電影，值得一看。

Original story of Kurosawa.

This was a gripping film with some minor short come.
A young police lost his pistol in the hustle bus. He tried to find it back. Though he could be given a new one (The background of the film was short after the WWII when it was short of the light arm.), he always thought of the lost one. He was responsible for it as the lost pistol was connected with a murder. At last the murderer was arrested and the pistol was found back. Obviously, Mifune wanted to find out the criminal himself (Mifune's boss said if Mifune was not a police, he would be a criminal.) and experienced the acts of the criminal.
Kurosawa did not have too much to say about THE WILD DOG. He said it a failure for he concerned more on the technique instead of the role. This was quite a problem. Compared with the script and the actor's act, was it a more difficult question of the director's technique. Some dull words and a long start to show Mifune as a soldier to look for the pistol among the low class made the audience neglect the charming person description. The heavy burden threaded the film. Though there was some technique mistakes, the film was worthwhile.
